The Society of Consulting Marine Engineers and Ship Surveyors was founded in 1920 and is the international organisation representing and promoting the expertise and experience of Consulting Marine Engineers, Naval Architects and Ship Surveyors in maritime affairs throughout the world.
With its head office in Southampton the Society has members in many countries that collectively meet the full range of maritime consultancy requirements.
The Society is governed by a President and Council elected by its members. The work of the Council is managed by the Chief Executive Officer based at the Society’s Southampton office who is responsible for day-to-day administration. The Council and the Certifying Authority Committees of the Society meet regularly to direct activities and to monitor the ongoing work of the Society. An Annual General Meeting is held each year where all members of the Society are invited to attend:

The Society offers the following services and benefits to its members:
Endorse the membership’s requirement for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) on a worldwide basis and provide formal attendance confirmation certificates related to member’s approved CPD activities;
Support and mentoring for member surveyors who wish to become MCA Code Examiners for vessels required to comply with the Small Vessel Codes and Fishing Vessel Codes;
An opportunity to become a member of our linked organisation The Federation of European Maritime Association of Surveyors and Consultants (FEMAS);
Occasional buffet lectures and workshops on a diversity of pertinent and interesting current topics;
Opportunities for informal meetings to network and discuss a variety of relevant subjects;
Discounted rates on courses, insurance and products.
The following classes of Membership are available.
By nomination and approval by the SCMS Membership Committee, a member who has been with the Society for at least three years and who has been not less than seven years in practice as a consultant at the time of their application for Fellowship.
A member who having the appropriate qualifications has been accepted and admitted to Membership of the Society following approved application, and who has been not less than two years in practice as a Consultant.
Any person who having appropriate qualifications approaching those required for admission to membership, and practising as a junior consultant with a recognised senior consultant for not less than two years (and with prospects of improving his qualifications).
These levels of membership are separate from SCMS Examiner status and will need to be applied for and considered separately.
